USA Media: Actor Clooney backs Harris
Following US President Joe Biden's withdrawal from the presidential race, Hollywood star George Clooney is backing possible replacement candidate Kamala Harris. "President Biden has shown what true leadership means. He is once again saving democracy," the actor wrote in a statement that was made available to the US broadcaster CNN and the New York Times, among others. "We look forward to doing all we can to support Vice President Harris in her historic task."

The 63-year-old had called on Biden to withdraw from the race for the presidency in a much-noticed piece in the New York Times in mid-July. Biden was too old and had already appeared unfit at a fundraising gala in Hollywood a few weeks earlier. The harsh opinion piece by the actor, who also supports the Democrats financially, caused quite a stir.
Biden announced his withdrawal from the US election campaign by letter on Sunday and proposed his running mate Harris as a replacement candidate. The 59-year-old has since received a lot of support from the Democratic Party and has already started campaigning.
