According to Egyptian media, the government in Cairo rejects reports that it is prepared to temporarily take in half a million people from the Gaza Strip.
Egypt "categorically and completely" denies such media reports, the pro-government broadcaster Al-Qahera News TV quoted the state information service as saying.
The pro-Iranian newspaper "Al-Akhbar" in Lebanon had reported that Egypt's President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi had informed Arab heads of state and government of his country's willingness to temporarily take in 500,000 people from the Gaza Strip in a specially built city on the Sinai Peninsula.
The statement went on to say that these were false reports. These "radically and completely contradict the steadfast rejection of any attempt to resettle the Palestinian brothers, whether forced or voluntary."
Just a few weeks ago, Egypt presented an alternative plan to the resettlement of Gaza residents proposed by US President Donald Trump. Cairo had received broad support from Arab countries for the plan, which envisages the reconstruction of the war-ravaged coastal strip.
