A man unlawfully deported to El Salvador will be returned to the United States after a long legal tug-of-war, according to media reports. Kilmar Abrego Garcia is on his way back, the US broadcasters ABC News and CNN reported, citing investigative circles and people familiar with the case. Criminal proceedings are to be opened against him in the USA for unlawful transportation of migrants, among other things.

His fate is the subject of a high-profile legal dispute in the USA between the government and the man's lawyers. Abrego Garcia was part of a larger group of migrants who were deported from the USA around three months ago and taken to the notorious maximum security prison "Cecot" (Centro de Confinamiento del Terrorismo) in El Salvador.
