According to media reports, US President Donald Trump's administration is suspending its military aid to Ukraine for the time being following the scandal during the visit of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

"This is not a permanent cessation of aid, but a pause," the US broadcaster Fox News quoted a high-ranking government official as saying. According to the New York Times, support will only be resumed if Trump determines that Ukraine is committed to peace negotiations with Russia. The newspaper also cites a high-ranking government official. There was initially no official statement from the government.

Trump had already questioned the Ukraine aid during the election campaign and openly threatened to withdraw all US support from Ukraine after the public dispute with Zelensky in the Oval Office on Friday. He claimed that Zelenskyi was not interested in peace as long as the USA provided military assistance because he saw this as a strategic advantage.

The move would have dramatic consequences for the country attacked by Russia: under Trump's predecessor Joe Biden, the United States was Ukraine's most important supporter and arms supplier. Since the start of the Russian invasion a good three years ago, Biden's administration has provided more than 65 billion dollars (a good 62 billion euros) in military aid for Kiev alone.
