Russian President Vladimir Putin has spoken on the phone with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman as part of the intensified diplomatic activity over the war in Ukraine. According to the Kremlin in Moscow, Putin thanked Saudi Arabia for hosting the meeting between Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his US counterpart Marco Rubio in Riyadh.

The Saudi capital is also considered a meeting place for a possible summit between Putin and US President Donald Trump. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, where the crown prince holds de facto power, is an important partner for both major powers. It has also already mediated in humanitarian issues in the Ukraine war.
Putin expressly emphasized Russia's cooperation with Saudi Arabia within the framework of the oil-producing countries Opec+ for a stable world oil market. Trump, for his part, has threatened Russia with lowering the price of oil if Moscow is not prepared to negotiate an end to its war of aggression. But for such a maneuver with larger quantities of oil, Washington would also need the cooperation of the important oil producer Saudi Arabia.
