The US government is relaxing the rules on cannabis in order to promote research into the medical use of the plant. President Donald Trump signed a decree to this effect, on the basis of which the plant and its constituent cannabidiol (CBD) will be classified in a lower drug category in future.

Many US states have legalized the personal use of marijuana for adults or allow it for medical purposes. At federal level, however, the laws are stricter. Users can be prosecuted. This will not change, confirmed a high-ranking government official. Multiple violations still carry the threat of several years in prison and heavy fines.

Much more moderate approach

Until now, marijuana was listed as a category 1 drug in the USA. This is where the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) classifies drugs, substances and chemicals that have no recognized medical use and a high potential for abuse. Category 3 includes substances with a moderate to low potential for physical and psychological dependence. These include ketamine, anabolic steroids and testosterone.

In Germany, weed and cultivation for adults has been permitted with many restrictions since April 1, 2024. The cultivation of up to three plants in private homes is permitted. You are allowed to store up to 50 grams of cannabis, with 25 grams on the go. Distances from playgrounds and schools are prescribed, and consumption in front of minors is prohibited. Non-commercial cultivation associations with up to 500 members are also permitted.
