US President Donald Trump is not seeking a deal on the Ukraine war for the meeting with Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin. "I'm not going to make a deal," he said at a press conference in Washington, pointing out that this was not his job. Trump, meanwhile, added that he would like to see a ceasefire. "I want to see the best deal that can be reached for both sides."

Trump: calls Selenskyj and Europeans after Putin meeting

On Friday, Trump plans to travel to Alaska to meet with his Russian counterpart and negotiate a peace solution in the Russian war of aggression, which has been going on for around three and a half years. The US President has already announced: "We will look at the framework conditions and then I will call President Selensky and the European heads of state and government directly after the meeting."

Trump also held out the prospect of a meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi and Putin: "The next meeting will be with Zelenskyi and Putin, or with Zelenskyi, Putin and myself." The US President offered to come along if he was needed at a meeting between the two.

Ukraine strictly rejects cession of territory

Trump had previously presented the meeting in Alaska as an attempt to come closer to an end to the fighting. In this context, he spoke of a possible exchange of territory between Ukraine and Russia. Ukraine strictly rejects the cession of territory. In his evening video address, Ukrainian President Zelensky indirectly emphasized that he would not accept a deal to swap territories. "We will defend our country and our independence at all costs," he emphasized. And everything concerning Ukraine must be decided with the participation of Ukraine.

Meanwhile, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is trying to find a common line between the Europeans and Trump on a possible end to the war in Ukraine. On Wednesday, two days before the planned meeting in Alaska, European heads of state and government will consult with Zelensky and Trump at the initiative of the Chancellor. According to the German government, a virtual meeting between Merz and the heads of state and government from France, the UK, Italy, Poland and Finland is planned before the digital consultations.
