First Lady Melania Trump has given her husband a letter with a reminder for peace and the protection of children for his meeting with Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin in Alaska. Melania Trump posted a report by US broadcaster Fox News with the full letter on her X account.

In the letter, which Trump is said to have given to Putin, she does not mention Ukraine at all. However, she describes the tragic situation of children in war zones in graphic terms and appeals to the Russian president's responsibility to protect the innocence of these children. They deserve this regardless of where they live, their government and ideology.

"It is undeniable that we must strive to create a dignified world for all - so that every soul can awaken in peace and the future itself is perfectly protected," the letter reads. Putin is in a position to turn this wishful thinking into reality with the "stroke of a pen".

Putin has been the subject of an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court in The Hague since March 2023 - primarily on charges of being responsible for the abduction of thousands of children from occupied Ukrainian territories. Unlike the European Union or Canada, however, neither the USA nor Russia recognize the court.

Washington was therefore not obliged to execute the arrest warrant during Putin's visit. At the summit on Friday, Putin set foot on US soil for the first time in years.
