Among other things, it provides for stricter regulations on the possession of stabbing weapons: Anyone carrying knives or other objects with blades longer than eight centimetres "without a legitimate reason" will be punished with a prison sentence of up to three years, according to the decree law.
According to the right-wing government, the aim is to counteract the increase in youth violence and the use of weapons and dangerous objects. Recently, there have been repeated violent incidents involving young people in Italy. In particular, the case of an 18-year-old who was stabbed to death by his classmate at school caused a stir.
More powers for the police
The measures adopted also provide for more powers for the police and judiciary. The background to this are recent riots at demonstrations, for example last weekend in Turin. According to the authorities, more than 100 security forces were injured. Video footage showed an officer being attacked with sticks and a hammer.
According to the law, the police can detain people "who pose a threat to public order due to specific circumstances" for up to twelve hours in order to keep them away from protests. The legal protection for police officers is also extended if, for example, investigations are initiated following the use of weapons in self-defense while on duty.
Criticism from the opposition
The opposition criticized the new measures. Angelo Bonelli described them as repressive. In particular, he criticized the preventive detention of up to twelve hours as a "serious violation of the constitutional right to demonstrate". Head of government Meloni defended the security package, saying that the government was using the measures to strengthen the instruments for preventing and combating the widespread crime in the country.
