Germany's Chancellor Friedrich Merz is expecting the decisive Bundestag vote on the planned pension reform this Friday. The CDU leader said this on the sidelines of German-Polish government consultations in Berlin.

The CDU/CSU parliamentary group will discuss the issue at its regular meeting on Tuesday and discuss "the corresponding conclusions". According to Merz, he expects the Bundestag to vote on the pension package this Friday - "which consists not only of the statutory pension insurance, but also of the so-called active pension, which also includes other content that should come into force on January 1, 2026," Merz said.

A group of 18 young CDU/CSU MPs had published a joint statement shortly beforehand. In it, the young Christian Democrats make it clear that they still consider the federal government's pension package to be "unacceptable". However, each member will decide for themselves how to vote in the Bundestag.
