CDU chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz insists on joint decisions by the allies on the future of Ukraine in NATO. "Since the last NATO summit, there has been a consensus within NATO that Ukraine should be given the prospect of membership," said the CDU chairman at the Munich Security Conference. If this was to be changed, NATO would have to do it together.

Regarding the negotiation strategy of the new US administration under President Donald Trump with Moscow, Merz said that he did not agree with anyone who would take Ukraine's Nato membership off the table before negotiations with Russia had begun.
"There is a status, there is an agreement. There is something that Nato has already decided," said Merz. It could be an option to change it, "but that is not something that a Nato member has to decide on its own".
Just last year, NATO had assured Ukraine that it could no longer be stopped on its way into the defense alliance. In the text for the final declaration of a summit in Washington, the path to membership was described as irreversible.
