German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is calling for greater involvement of the government in Kiev and the Europeans in the negotiations to end the war in Ukraine. "Europe is not a pawn, but a sovereign actor for its own interests and values," said Merz in the general debate in the German parliament.

He welcomed the American involvement in resolving the war - but European affairs could only be decided in agreement with Europe. "Yes, we want this war to end as quickly as possible," emphasized Merz. "But an agreement negotiated between major powers without the consent of Ukraine and without the consent of the Europeans will not be the basis for a real, sustainable peace in Ukraine." For genuine negotiations, Russian President Vladimir Putin must be made aware of "the hopelessness of his warmongering".

The goal must be peace in freedom, explained Merz. "We don't want peace through capitulation, we want the peoples of Europe to live together peacefully on the basis of our democratic, liberal values."
