German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is aiming for 80 percent of the more than 900,000 Syrians in Germany to return to their home country.

"In the longer term over the next three years, that was also President Sharaa's wish, around 80 percent of the Syrians currently in Germany should return to their home country," he said at a press conference with the Syrian interim president Ahmed al-Sharaa in Berlin.
