The Christian Democrat said this at a meeting with the heads of state and government of the so-called E3 states and the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Selenskyj in London. We need to talk about these details, said Merz. "That's why we're here".
He was eager to hear what Selenskyj could report on the talks mediated by the USA. The coming days could be "a decisive time for all of us", said the Chancellor.
Merz, like UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron via their respective countries, reaffirmed Germany's support for Kiev. There could be no doubt about that. He added: "We all know: The fate of this country is the fate of Europe."
Selenskyj said that important decisions had to be made. Among other things, the consultations in London were about "unity between Europe and Ukraine and also about unity between Europe, Ukraine and the United States", said the Ukrainian, and: "There are things that we cannot do without the Americans (...)."
Negotiators from the USA and Ukraine had spent three days in the US state of Florida until Saturday negotiating a new version of the peace plan presented by US President Donald Trump. The original version had been widely criticized as a "Russian wish list". According to Selenskyj, he joined in at the end of the talks and described the exchange as focused and constructive.
It is not yet publicly known to what extent the 28-point US plan has changed. Important points appear to be territorial issues and US security guarantees for Ukraine. However, Trump expressed doubts that Zelensky would agree to the new plan.
