Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz is traveling to Egypt on Monday to attend a summit meeting of more than 20 heads of state and government, where the agreement on a ceasefire after two years of war in Gaza is to be ceremoniously signed. "Germany will be involved in the implementation of the peace plan, first and foremost for the observance of a stable ceasefire and for humanitarian aid," explained a government spokesperson in Berlin. "The Federal Chancellor is underlining this commitment with tomorrow's trip."

The celebrations will begin in the afternoon in the seaside resort of Sharm el-Sheikh. US President Donald Trump, whose peace plan Israel and the Islamist Hamas agreed to at the end of the week, will also be attending. French President Emmanuel Macron and UN Secretary-General António Guterres have also already confirmed their attendance. Great Britain's Prime Minister Keir Starmer will also be attending.
After the ceasefire comes into force on Friday, all hostages still alive are to be released by Monday afternoon in exchange for Palestinian prisoners.
Trump will land in Israel in the morning, meet with relatives of the hostages, give a speech in parliament and then travel on to Egypt.
