According to the government, Denmark is now on track to achieve its ambitious climate target for 2030.

In a new assessment, the Danish Climate Ministry expects the country to reduce its CO2 emissions by 72 percent by then compared to 1990.

This is the first time that the ministry has concluded that Denmark will meet the political target of a 70 percent reduction in CO2 emissions set for 2020. So far, climate-damaging greenhouse gas emissions have already been more than halved. The annually published assessment follows the United Nations' calculation method, which enables global comparability of national reductions.

E-car boom and greener agriculture

The climate ministry cites the great interest of Danes in electric cars and the prospect of more climate-friendly agriculture as the main reasons for the positive forecast. Electric cars now account for more than half of all newly registered cars in Denmark, which is noticeable in the capital Copenhagen, among other places, due to the audibly quieter traffic.

In the area of agriculture, the Danish government and several parliamentary parties agreed almost six months ago on a comprehensive implementation of measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 1.8 million tons of CO2 equivalents by 2030. Among other things, the framework agreement also provides for the introduction of what the government claims will be the world's first CO2 levy on agriculture from 2030.
