The Hindu nationalist party (BJP) of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is back in power in the capital territory of Delhi after 27 years. The BJP, which also governs at federal level, secured 48 out of 70 seats in the Delhi Legislative Assembly in the regional elections. The Aam Aadmi Party (common man's party/AAP), which had won the election five years ago by a landslide, followed behind with 22 seats. This is according to the figures released by the State Election Commission.

AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal, who is known as a harsh critic of Modi, conceded defeat and congratulated the BJP. He accepted the voters' mandate, the three-time Delhi chief minister said in a video message on the X platform. He hoped that the BJP would keep the promises for which it had been elected. The Union Territory also includes the capital New Delhi. More than 15.6 million eligible voters were allowed to cast their votes, according to the Election Commission. The turnout was more than 60 percent.

Prestige success for Modi

The victory in the nationally important election is considered a great prestige success for Modi. The BJP had lost its absolute majority in the lower house of parliament for the first time in ten years in last year's general election in the world's most populous country, but remained the strongest force. Similar to the AAP, the BJP campaigned in Delhi with the provision of free health services and monthly payments of more than 2,000 rupees (around 22 euros) to poorer women, among other things.

Another loser is the Congress party of opposition leader Rahul Gandhi, which once again came away empty-handed. His party's fight against pollution, inflation and corruption will continue, he announced on X.
