Pakistan has stepped up security in the capital ahead of the start of negotiations to settle the conflict between the USA and Iran.

More than 10,000 security forces, including soldiers, police and paramilitary units, have been stationed in Islamabad, according to officials. The government district and the diplomatic zone have been sealed off.

After more than five weeks of war, representatives from Washington and Tehran want to discuss a permanent end to the conflict in Islamabad. According to security circles in Pakistan, preliminary talks at expert level are planned for today. A meeting of the negotiators is then planned for Saturday. The talks could also continue until Sunday if necessary.

Iran has not yet confirmed the departure or arrival of its negotiating delegation. Mistrust prevails ahead of the talks and is also likely to characterize the negotiations. Both the Israeli attacks last year and the war at the end of February took place in the midst of ongoing negotiations between Iran and the USA. The warring parties are also at odds over the opening of the Strait of Hormuz and the ongoing Israeli attacks in Lebanon.
