Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke of a terrible attack with Russian ballistic missiles in the morning. While people were going to church on Palm Sunday to commemorate the entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem, an enemy missile hit the city, Selenskyj announced on Telegram.
There was damage to streets, houses, a training facility and several cars. Pictures showed lifeless bodies in the streets, burning cars and severe devastation.
Authorities: Crisis team set up
The city authorities announced that a crisis team had been set up. Many buildings were damaged.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha spoke of a "war crime", of "absolute evil" on an important Christian holiday. In messages on Platform X, he and Selensky called for a decisive response from the international allies. Sybiha criticized Russia for not agreeing to a US proposal of 11 March for a ceasefire in Ukraine.
Ukraine demands more help from the West
"Instead, Russia is expanding its terror", said Sybiha. He called on Western partners to provide Ukraine with additional air defense capacities and to increase the pressure on Moscow. "Strength is the only language they understand and the only way to put an end to the terrible terror," he said.
Sumy is repeatedly the target of attacks. Ukraine has been fighting back against the Russian invasion for more than three years.
