The Kremlin has confirmed its interest in the third round of negotiations between Kiev and Moscow on an end to the war proposed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi.

At the last meeting, both sides had exchanged their position papers, recalled Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov. According to Russian agencies, he said that an exchange of views and negotiations were now imminent on these papers, which had so far been completely contradictory. A "great deal of diplomatic work" was still required.

At the weekend, Zelensky proposed a meeting later in the week. According to Peskov, no final date has yet been set. He stated that the Russian side had not made any changes to the composition of the delegation. Presidential advisor and former Culture Minister Vladimir Medinsky acted as Russia's chief negotiator at the last two rounds of talks in Istanbul.

In May, Kiev and Moscow negotiated bilaterally for the first time in three years. At this and a later meeting in Istanbul in June, both sides agreed on a major prisoner exchange and the return of fallen soldiers. However, steps to end the war of aggression against Ukraine ordered by Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin in February 2022 were not discussed.
