The National Guardsman who was shot and seriously injured in Washington last week is apparently doing better. He gave a thumbs-up sign when asked to do so, said the governor of West Virginia, Patrick Morrisey. A nurse had asked the 24-year-old man to give a thumbs-up and he had responded, the governor said. He also wiggled his toes, he said.

Last Wednesday, a man had shot at two National Guardsmen near the Farragut West subway stop, just blocks from the White House. One of the two, a young woman from the state of West Virginia, succumbed to her injuries. The suspect - an Afghan - was overpowered and is in custody.
In response, the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced that all asylum decisions would be suspended for the time being. The US State Department also announced on X that it had immediately stopped issuing visas to people traveling on Afghan passports.
