Amid nationwide protests, the authorities in Iran have switched off worldwide internet access for the population. The country is in an "Internet blackout", reported Netblocks, an organization specializing in network blocking. This follows a series of censorship measures that "hinder the public's right to communicate at a critical moment", it said in a post on X.

Data from the IT company Cloudflare also showed a drop in web traffic of around 90 percent on Thursday. A small part of the government and the military and power apparatus should be able to continue to use the internet freely.
