NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has arrived for a visit to Ukraine, which is under attack from Russia.

Pictures published on social media by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi show the two of them placing grave markers at the memorial to fallen soldiers on Independence Square in Kiev. It is important to honor the memory of those who sacrificed their lives in defense of their homeland, Selenskyj wrote.

Rutte's visit comes against the backdrop of new serious Russian attacks on civilian objects, especially energy facilities, in Ukraine. Just a few days ago, US President Donald Trump declared that Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin had complied with his request to pause the attacks due to the extremely cold weather in Ukraine. The latest attacks show that this limited ceasefire is now over.

A new round of negotiations to end the war in Ukraine is due to begin on Wednesday in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates. The USA is acting as a mediator between the warring parties. In return for an end to the violence, Russia is demanding, among other things, additional territories in Ukraine and a renunciation of the country's aspiration to join NATO.
