According to NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, the West must prepare itself for a continuing threat from Russia and China.

Both states would increase their defense industrial cooperation to an unprecedented level. "They are preparing for a long-term confrontation," warned the Dutchman at a security conference in Prague.

Russia and China are investing heavily in the expansion and modernization of their armies, Rutte continued. He called on the Europeans to expand their efforts to increase arms production even further: "We need more than we currently have - much more."

Armament of China and Russia: "Breathtaking pace"

The arms industries in China and Russia are producing weapons and heavy military equipment at a remarkable - one could even say "breathtaking" - pace, warned Rutte. This was not just to show off at big military parades in Moscow or, as recently, in Beijing. Russia and China are trying to exert aggressive influence and change the global world order in order to undermine freedom and security.

Rutte responded to critics of the West's arms build-up: "Our aim is not to provoke. Our aim is to protect." The NATO Secretary General took part in the IISS Prague Defense Summit in Prague. According to its own information, the event brings together top representatives from politics, the military and the arms industry.
