At a meeting of the Nato-Ukraine Council, Ukraine was promised additional support in the defensive fight against Russia. "Following the recent Russian attack, allies have today reaffirmed that they will increase their military assistance to Ukraine," said NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg following the consultations. Ukraine must continue to be provided with the equipment and ammunition it needs to defend itself against the Russian invasion. It was a matter of the country being able to hold its own in battle.

The meeting on Wednesday afternoon took place at ambassador level and was convened by Stoltenberg at Ukraine's request. Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov informed the allies via video link about the most urgent military needs of his armed forces.

According to diplomats, he also discussed the latest Russian airstrikes, the situation on the battlefield in the Donbass and the objectives of the Ukrainian operation in the Russian region of Kursk. He also thanked the allies for the recently promised aid and the provision of F-16 fighter jets, which are already in use.

There was initially no information on possible new concrete aid commitments. Some of the participants in the meeting called for the lifting of all restrictions on the use of Western weapons against Russia, according to diplomats. It was also emphasized that Ukraine's right to self-defense also includes attacks within Russia.

The NATO-Ukraine Council met for the first time last year at the NATO summit in Lithuania at the level of heads of state and government. The new body was created for exchanges in crisis situations. It is also intended to facilitate closer cooperation until the conditions for Ukraine's admission to NATO are met. These include an end to the Russian war of aggression and reforms in Ukraine.
