According to a Moscow negotiator, Russia and the USA are discussing the joint exploitation of Russian rare earth metals.

Companies have already shown interest in these projects, Kirill Dmitriev, head of the Russian State Investment Fund, told the newspaper "Izvestia". However, he did not give any details.

"Rare metals and earths are an important area of cooperation, and we have definitely started talks on various rare earth metals and projects in Russia," said Dmitriev. Rare earths are 17 metals that are found in many everyday items such as smartphones, laptops and televisions.

Raw materials agreement with Ukraine difficult

US President Donald Trump wants to normalize the broken relations with Moscow and bring an end to the war in Ukraine. Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin offered to cooperate on raw materials back in February. He said that Russian deposits of rare earths are many times larger than those of Ukraine - with which Trump is also negotiating an agreement.

However, according to media reports, the latest draft agreement sent by Washington to Kiev serves purely American economic interests. Ukraine would not receive the hoped-for security guarantees. President Volodymyr Zelenskyi is therefore hesitant to sign, which is why Trump recently threatened him with "big, big problems".
