The food company Nestlé is recalling a baby milk powder in France for safety reasons. The reason is the discovery of a bacterium in a production line.

"We have detected very small quantities of cereulide in some undelivered batches and are proactively recalling batches of products on the same line and in the same production period as a precautionary measure," the Nestlé France website stated on Friday. The product in question is Guigoz Optipro Relay 1 for infants from zero to six months.

Cereulide is a toxin that can be produced by the bacterium Bacillus cereus. This can potentially lead to diarrhea and vomiting in infants. According to Nestlé, Bacillus cereus is often found in raw materials and sometimes in foods such as milk and dairy products. Most strains have no impact on food safety.

The voluntary recall is being carried out in cooperation with the relevant authorities, it added. No other Guigoz products are affected. According to the national pharmacists' association, the recall campaign began two days ago. So far, no cases of illness have been reported in connection with the consumption of the affected products.
