Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has confirmed that his country has carried out heavy air strikes in the neighboring country following the fall of Syrian ruler Bashar al-Assad. Israel will do everything it can to guarantee its security, he said. "I have therefore authorized the bombing of strategic military facilities of the Syrian military by the air force so that they do not fall into the hands of the jihadists," Netanyahu said, according to his office. Previously, Defense Minister Israel Katz had confirmed that the Syrian navy had been sunk.

Activists in Syria and Israeli media had reported hundreds of Israeli airstrikes in which a large part of the Syrian army's land forces had been destroyed. Suspected chemical weapons as well as research and production facilities for such weapons are also said to have been the target of Israeli attacks.
Warning to rebels in Syria
The army announced that more than 350 targets in Syria had been attacked. Most of the strategic weapons such as Scud missiles, cruise missiles, surface-to-sea, surface-to-air and surface-to-surface missiles, drones, fighter jets, combat helicopters, radars, tanks, hangars and more were destroyed. Anti-aircraft batteries, Syrian Air Force airfields and dozens of weapons production sites in Damascus, Homs, Tartus, Latakia and Palmyra were also attacked.
Netanyahu emphasized that Israel did not want to interfere in Syria's internal affairs. But he issued a sharp warning to the rebels. "If the new regime in Syria allows Iran to re-establish itself or allows Iranian weapons to be transported to Hezbollah, we will respond forcefully and demand a high price," he said.
