In addition, relations between Israel and its neighbor Egypt were the subject of the meeting in Jerusalem, Netanyahu's office announced. Together with Qatar and the USA, Egypt is mediating in indirect talks between Israel and the Islamist Hamas.
The state-affiliated Egyptian television station Al-Kahira had reported before the meeting that the talks were also to focus on compliance with the ceasefire, aid deliveries for the Gaza Strip and obstacles to the implementation of the peace plan. According to the broadcaster, Rashad also wanted to meet with US negotiator Steve Witkoff, who is currently in Israel.
As part of the first phase of the Gaza agreement, Hamas has yet to hand over 15 dead hostages. The ceasefire in the Gaza war has recently been shaky. As part of the agreement, aid deliveries for the people in the Gaza Strip are also to be expanded.
It is not yet clear whether the agreement promoted by the USA will actually lead to a complete end to the fighting in the Gaza Strip. There are still major points of contention that remain unresolved, including the disarmament of Hamas, which is rejected by the Islamists.
