Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu intends to implement the disarmament of the Islamist Hamas as envisaged in the US peace plan. As he had discussed with US President Donald Trump, this could happen "the easy way or the difficult way", he said in Jerusalem this evening. "But in any case, it will happen." This is now the focus of the Gaza peace plan, Netanyahu said. Hamas has so far rejected disarmament.

There will be no reconstruction of the Palestinian territory before the demilitarization of the Gaza Strip and the destruction of Hamas tunnels there, emphasized Israel's Prime Minister. The coastal strip was extensively destroyed in the war between Israel and the terrorist organization Hamas.

The Israeli head of government also reiterated that Israel would retain security control over the Gaza Strip. He did not provide any details. As part of the second phase of the peace plan promoted by the USA, Israel's army is to withdraw from the Gaza Strip and gradually hand over previously held areas to an international stabilization force (ISF). The USA had already declared this second phase. However, the ISF has not yet been established.

Netanyahu: Iranian attack would be a serious mistake

Netanyahu also threatened Iran once again: "Should Iran make the grave mistake of attacking Israel, we will respond with a force that Iran has never experienced before."

In view of speculation about a possible new US attack in Iran and mutual threats between the countries, there are currently major concerns about a military escalation in the region. Last June, there was a twelve-day war between Israel and Iran. At the time, Israel joined the USA in bombing targets from the air, while Iran's armed forces fired ballistic missiles at Israel.
