On the last day of his trip to the US, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu once again stated Israel's conditions for a permanent ceasefire in the Gaza war. Hamas must lay down its weapons, the Gaza Strip must be demilitarized and Hamas must no longer have state or military capabilities, Netanyahu said in a video address. At the start of a 60-day ceasefire, which is currently being negotiated in Qatar, talks are to begin to end the war permanently, Netanyahu said of the plans.
The Israeli head of government also threatened that if the aforementioned demands were not met through negotiations within the 60 days of a possible ceasefire, Israel would enforce them by force of arms.
The Israeli government had already announced these conditions in the past. Hamas said that the Islamist organization was prepared to give up its rule in the Gaza Strip. However, it has so far refused to lay down its arms.
