After the last votes were counted in the Netherlands, the left-liberal D66 has extended its lead over the right-wing populist Geert Wilders. This means that D66 has won Wednesday's parliamentary elections. The electoral authority in The Hague announced the results of the votes cast by postal voters from abroad in the evening.

D66, with its leading candidate Rob Jetten, now has 26 of the 150 seats in parliament, while the radical right-wing Wilders also has 26 - but with fewer votes. The election service of the ANP news agency had already declared D66's victory on Friday when the preliminary results were announced. The official final result will be announced on November 7 in The Hague.
Traditionally, the party with the most votes is given the task of sounding out opportunities for a coalition. The D66 lead candidate Rob Jetten now has the best prospects of becoming head of government. At least four parties are needed for a stable majority.
Wilders sows doubt
Wilders has not yet acknowledged his election defeat. In reports on X, he expressed doubts about the legitimacy of the result. These reports were rejected by the authorities as unfounded.
Wilders' anti-Islam party lost eleven seats compared to the previous election in 2023. Back then, he became the strongest party and was part of a coalition for the first time. However, he left this coalition after eleven months. Now all the major parties are refusing to work with him, meaning that renewed participation in government seems out of the question.
Result unclear for a long time
Since election night on Wednesday, the left-wing liberals and Wilders were almost neck and neck for a long time. But on Friday, after the votes had been counted in the constituencies, D66's lead was unassailable. According to the forecasts, D66 was also expected to win one remaining seat. But that is not the case.
