Despite increasing doubts about his physical fitness for a second term in office, US President Joe Biden is on the road for campaign appearances in the state of Pennsylvania. "I've frankly never been more optimistic about America's future," the Democrat said at a historically predominantly black church in Philadelphia. "If we stick together. I'm serious about that."

The congregation gave Biden a jubilant welcome. The 81-year-old read his speech from a manuscript in a powerful voice, barely deviating from the text. Biden concluded by saying that he would be hosting the NATO summit in Washington next week. "The world is watching us. No joke, the world is looking to America - not to carry its burden, but to guide its hopes," he said.

Biden's performances have come under extreme scrutiny since the botched TV duel against his Republican challenger Donald Trump just over a week ago. Many party members are increasingly skeptical about whether he is still the right candidate for the Democrats. A TV interview with Biden on Friday (local time) partly fueled these doubts. Among other things, the US President said that only God could persuade him to withdraw.

Democratic representatives from the House of Representatives will meet today, followed by senators tomorrow, to discuss the election campaign and Biden's candidacy before the start of the congressional session week in Washington.
