Following renewed fighting in northern Syria, the transitional government and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have agreed on a ceasefire. This was confirmed by the SDF and the Ministry of Defense in Damascus.

According to the ministry, the ceasefire will initially apply for four days. It will begin today at 8 p.m. (local time, 6 p.m. CET). The SDF declared the "full commitment" of its armed forces to the agreement.

A government statement published by the state news agency Sana said that the SDF had been given four days to work out a concrete plan for the practical integration of Hasaka province. The aim of the transitional government in Damascus is to unite Syria after the fall of ruler Bashar al-Assad. For the Kurds, who were one of the USA's most important allies in the fight against the Islamic State terrorist militia, this means that they may lose or have to give up territory, power and rights they have fought for.

For several days now, government troops and their allies have been advancing further and further into the areas controlled by the SDF in the north and east of the country. In the past few days, the transitional government has already taken control of the provinces of Rakka and Dair as-Saur.
