France's new Prime Minister François Bayrou has emphasized the country's complicated situation. "No one knows more than me how difficult the situation is," he said with regard to France's high debts and the budget dispute that led to the fall of the previous government. It was a "Himalayan mountain range" of difficulties of all kinds.

In the dispute over an austerity budget, the left-wing party and the right-wing Rassemblement National toppled the previous government with the support of other opposition MPs just over a week ago. France urgently needs to tighten its belt; the EU Commission is pursuing deficit proceedings against Paris due to excessive new debt.

Bayrou announced that he wanted to overcome the division in society and "tear down the glass wall that has been erected between citizens and power".

The Greens and Socialists had previously spoken out several times against the Macron confidant, who in their view would not bring a new beginning, but a continuation of previous policies. It is therefore uncertain whether Bayrou will achieve a majority capable of governing.
