The White House is restricting journalists' access to an area of the press office where government spokesperson Karoline Leavitt, among others, has her office. Reporters must now make an appointment to visit there, according to US President Donald Trump's spokeswoman. Previously, accredited journalists were able to move freely in the press area of the White House.

A journalists' association immediately criticized the new restrictions. According to the White House Correspondents' Association, these prevented the media from interviewing government representatives and ensuring transparency. The association represents journalists accredited to the US seat of government.

According to Leavitt, the restrictions are necessary because the White House press office is also responsible for the communication of the National Security Council and confidential documents could therefore also be found in the offices.

The White House has had a strained relationship with the media during Trump's second term in office. Leavitt repeatedly accuses them of being biased and not reporting fairly on the president. A few weeks ago, Trump spoke of the possibility of moving media representatives from the White House to a neighboring government building. Most recently, the Department of Defense, which Trump renamed the War Department, also tightened access rules for journalists in the Pentagon.
