According to negotiating circles, the aim is now to reach an agreement by midday on Wednesday. The talks are to continue at 9.30 a.m. at the CDU party headquarters.
CDU presidium meeting in the morning
CDU circles also reported that CDU leader Friedrich Merz also wanted to inform the party's closest leadership circle, the presidium, about the status of the negotiations. Throughout the day, the CDU/CSU and SPD had been wrestling with compromises to reach an agreement - in varying discussion formats and repeatedly interrupted by individual discussions within the parties.
Not least in view of the international situation and the new US customs policy, the negotiators had experienced additional pressure for a rapid conclusion. For almost four weeks, leading politicians from the CDU, CSU and SPD have been negotiating a joint coalition agreement, which should set out the most important plans of a black-red government.
