Valais is not appointing an extraordinary public prosecutor in connection with the criminal investigation into the Crans-Montana fire disaster. The Valais public prosecutor's office is continuing its investigation, as it announced on Friday.

"The office has come to the conclusion that there are no objective or legal grounds to justify the appointment of an extraordinary public prosecutor," writes the public prosecutor's office in a press release signed by Attorney General Beatrice Pilloud. The public prosecutor's office met on January 19 to decide on this request, which had been submitted by several lawyers of the victims' families.

"The Central Office of the Public Prosecutor of the Canton of Valais, to which the dossier has been transferred, is responsible for cases of particular importance, especially for crimes in connection with major events or extraordinary events with a high media resonance," it continues.
