North Korea's ruler Kim Jong Un has called for the development and production of more kamikaze drones as an "important part of preparations for war". According to a report by state news agency KCNA, he said this during a test of domestically developed drones. So-called kamikaze drones are unmanned flying objects that are equipped with explosive charges and guided into enemy targets.

According to KCNA, the drone test took place in Pyongyang on Saturday. Official photos show white flying objects with x-shaped wings flying towards dummy tanks and exploding. According to the South Korean news agency Yonhap, the targets are modeled on South Korean K-2 tanks.
The weapons test comes amid heightened tensions on the Korean peninsula. The armed forces of the USA and South Korea are currently conducting a large-scale military exercise to deter North Korea. The North Korean Foreign Ministry has criticized the military exercises as "provocative war drills" and a "prelude to nuclear war". Washington and Seoul reject Pyongyang's accusations.
Military cooperation between North Korea and Russia
North Korea has significantly increased its missile tests over the past two years and stepped up its rhetoric against the USA and South Korea. There has been increased military cooperation with Russia.
South and North Korea have been divided since the Korean War (1950-53). To date, the two Koreas have not signed a peace treaty.
