In the case of Afghanistan, applications also increased by 8.7%, as the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) announced on Monday. Turkey followed in second place, despite the fact that the number of Turkish asylum seekers fell by almost 40 percent.
According to the SEM, almost half of the 2024 asylum applications submitted were from nationals of the two countries. Last year, around 8,500 people also left Switzerland independently and under control - a decrease of around 34% compared to the previous year.
The decline is a result of the lower number of voluntary departures by people with Ukrainian citizenship, the report continued. A further 2,200 or so people were either returned to their home country or a third country. An uncontrolled departure was registered for around 12,500 people
