Further victims are suspected under the rubble, as the rescue and recovery work has not yet been completed, even in the morning hours. "The ringing of telephones can be heard from the ruins - the search will continue until we are sure that we have everyone," said Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko, according to the Unian news agency. Rescue teams are still searching for two children who have not yet been found at the scene of the accident.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Selenskyj, who is on an official visit to South Africa today, expressed his condolences to the families of the victims. He announced on Platform X that he was canceling part of the program planned there. After a meeting with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, he will return to Ukraine immediately. It had been 44 days since his country had agreed to a complete ceasefire, Selensky wrote. Russia continues to kill. The world needs to understand what is really happening, he wrote, referring to almost 70 missiles and around 150 attack drones.
Massive attack on the Ukrainian capital
During the night, the Russian military launched a massive aerial attack against the neighboring country. According to the authorities, drones, ballistic missiles and cruise missiles such as the sea-based modern Kalibr missiles were used.
There were strikes in several locations in Kiev, with the district of Svyatoshyn in the north-west of the capital being the worst affected. Several high-rise buildings were damaged, and garages and a large number of cars were also burnt out.
Across the country, there were victims and damage in nine regions. In addition to Kiev, the regions affected included Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhya and Zhytomyr. In the latter, for example, a firefighter was injured in the line of duty when the Russians launched a second wave of attacks.
Moscow speaks of military objectives
The Russian Ministry of Defense later also commented on the attacks: "Tonight, the Russian armed forces carried out a massive strike with long-range ground, air and sea-based high-precision weapons and drones against companies from the aviation and missile industry, mechanical engineering, tank technology and the production of rocket fuel and gunpowder," it said in a press release.
