Dozens of people in Lebanon have been injured in explosions - apparently caused by exploding telecommunications equipment. This was reported by the news agency DPA from a hospital in a southern suburb of the capital Beirut.

According to Hezbollah circles, numerous members of the Shiite militia were injured. The exact cause of the explosions was initially unclear.

Local media reported that there were explosions in the southern suburbs of Beirut and in southern Lebanon. It was not initially clear whether there were any fatalities. Eyewitnesses reported panic in the streets of Beirut. Numerous ambulances were deployed. The Lebanese Ministry of Health called on all hospitals to be on high alert.

It was suspected that Israel may have deliberately detonated the devices as an attack on Hezbollah fighters. It also remained unclear at first exactly what kind of communication devices were involved.

According to media reports, Iran's ambassador to Lebanon, Modshtaba Amani, was also injured in the explosion of a radio receiver. The Islamic Republic of Iran is an important ally of Hezbollah.

Since the beginning of the Gaza war almost a year ago, there have been almost daily confrontations between the Lebanese Hezbollah and the Israeli military in the border region. There have been casualties on both sides as a result of the shelling - most of them members of Hezbollah. According to Israeli reports, three Hezbollah fighters were killed in an attack on a town in southern Lebanon on Tuesday. According to its own statements, the pro-Iranian Shia militia is acting in solidarity with the Islamist Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
