Former US President Barack Obama has praised the elite Harvard University for its resistance to interference by the White House. "Harvard has set an example for other universities by rejecting an unlawful and heavy-handed attempt to stifle academic freedom," Obama wrote on the X platform.

Obama, who had studied at the university himself, went on to write that he hoped other institutions would follow suit. The Democrat had recently called for universities to use their endowments or cut costs rather than comply with US President Donald Trump's demands.

Harvard is refusing to implement the change of course demanded by Trump, for example with regard to student admissions. As a result, the US government put billions in Harvard funding on hold. Most recently, Trump threatened that Harvard could lose its tax concessions and be taxed as a political institution. Trump accuses the university of having a left-wing ideology.
