Turkish investigators have once again targeted city administrations run by the opposition. According to the state news agency Anadolu, 13 people have been arrested in the metropolis of Istanbul and 17 in the southern Turkish city of Antalya as part of corruption proceedings.

These include employees of city administrations and companies, the largest opposition party CHP confirmed to dpa. Another person is also wanted.

According to Anadolu, the suspects are accused of bribery, tender manipulation and membership of a terrorist organization, among other things.

Largest opposition party under pressure

The arrests are part of a series of similar measures against CHP politicians. In March, the arrest and dismissal of the mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem Imamoglu, sparked nationwide protests. The mayor of Antalya was arrested at the beginning of July on corruption charges and deposed shortly afterwards. At least 16 mayors of the party are in custody.

The CHP, which achieved a surprise success in last year's nationwide local elections, considers the action against the party to be politically motivated. The government rejects this.
