The electoral commission in the West African country of Ghana has declared opposition candidate John Dramani Mahama the winner of Saturday's presidential election. At this point on Monday evening (local time), 267 of 276 constituencies had been counted - even a defeat for the 66-year-old in the remaining constituencies would not have changed the result. At this point, Mahama had already received 56.5 percent of the vote, giving him the necessary absolute majority in the first round of voting.

The main rival candidate and incumbent Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia had already conceded defeat on Sunday and congratulated Mahama on his victory.

Mahama was already head of state from 2012 to early 2017. During the election campaign, he promised a "restart" - a new beginning. Start-up programs should support young entrepreneurs as well as farmers. During the election campaign, he focused in particular on young people. Of the 18.7 million registered voters in Ghana, more than 10.3 million are between 18 and 35 years old.
