Tariff structures in the outpatient sector are insufficiently maintained or updated too rarely. This is the finding of the Swiss Federal Audit Office. However, it is not possible to draw conclusions as to how more regular updating would affect healthcare costs.

The Swiss Federal Audit Office (SFAO) examined whether the Confederation is equipped to ensure that tariffs paid by basic insurance cover at most the actual costs required for efficient service provision.

In the report published on Wednesday, the SFAO criticized the fact that the data basis for numerous tariff structures has not been updated in almost thirty years. Developments - such as technical advances and less time spent on examinations and treatments - are therefore not reflected.

The contracting parties should actually carry out these reviews on a regular basis and make adjustments if the cost reality is no longer certain. However, there are no reliable processes for this in the outpatient sector.
