Pakistan nominates Trump for Nobel Peace Prize

Tensions between the neighboring nuclear powers and arch-rivals Pakistan and India had intensified after a terrorist attack in the Indian part of Kashmir on April 22. Twenty-six people - mainly Indian tourists - were killed in the attack. There were skirmishes on the border and mutual air strikes. On May 10, both states announced a ceasefire. According to Trump's account, he had mediated between the neighboring countries and exerted pressure on them via trade policy in order to persuade them to agree to a ceasefire. He also announced his intention to seek a long-term solution to the Kashmir conflict.

Modi denies Trump's mediating role

In a speech to the nation, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif thanked Trump for his support for the ceasefire. India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on the other hand, made it clear in a telephone call with Trump on Wednesday that there had been no mediation by the USA and that the ceasefire had been agreed bilaterally, according to the Indian Ministry of External Affairs.

Pakistan is confident that Trump's efforts will continue to contribute to regional and global stability - especially in the current crises in the Middle East, according to Islamabad. Only on Friday, Trump had complained on his Truth Social platform that despite his various peace efforts - including ending the war between India and Pakistan - he would not receive the Nobel Peace Prize.

The Nobel institutions in Stockholm and Oslo traditionally keep the names of those nominated for the Nobel Prizes secret for 50 years. However, it is not uncommon for those entitled to nominate to reveal who they recommend as a candidate for one of the prizes. The winner of this year's Nobel Peace Prize will be announced on October 10. It will be awarded on December 10, the anniversary of the death of dynamite inventor and prize donor Alfred Nobel (1833-1896).
