Following the fall of Syrian ruler Bashar al-Assad, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has spoken out in favor of preserving Syria's territorial unity. "We reaffirm the need to respect the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Syrian Arab Republic," read a statement from his office in Ramallah in the West Bank, which was distributed by the official news agency Wafa. "The state of Palestine and its people stand with the brotherly Syrian people," Abbas added.

The Assad government was rather hostile to the Palestinian factions, especially the Islamists. Hundreds of Palestinians were imprisoned in Syria under Assad's rule.
Abbas emphasized that it was now important for all political forces to prioritize the interests of the Syrian people in order to restore Syria's important role in the region. This would also benefit the "interests of the Palestinian people and their just aspirations for freedom and independence", the 89-year-old explained.
