According to Palestinian reports, 16 people were killed in an airstrike attributed to Israel on a refugee shelter in the central Gaza Strip. Around 75 other Palestinians were injured, according to the media office controlled by the Islamist Hamas.

The building hit from the air in the refugee district of Nuseirat was reportedly a former school of the UN refugee agency UNRWA, which has served as accommodation for around 7,000 refugees since the outbreak of the Gaza war. The information could not be independently verified.

The Israeli military announced shortly afterwards that it had attacked several Hamas fighters in the area of the UNRWA school. The building had served the terrorists as a hiding place and base of operations for attacks on the Israeli military. In the run-up to the attack, the military had taken numerous steps to minimize the risk to civilians. This information could not be independently verified either.

The Gaza war was triggered by the massacre of more than 1,200 people killed by terrorists from Hamas and other groups in Israel on October 7, 2023.

According to the Hamas-controlled health authority on Saturday, at least 38,098 people have been killed in the Gaza Strip since then and a further 87,705 injured. The figures include both armed militants and civilians.
