An analysis of independent satellite images shows a decline in the efficiency of palm oil plantations with sustainability certificates in Malaysia. This can harm small farmers and the environment, as a study by the University of St. Gallen shows.

In and of themselves, sustainability certificates are a positive thing. However, there is a risk that certain social aspects may be overlooked if too much emphasis is placed on the environment or vice versa, as the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) announced on Wednesday.
The researchers used the part of the plantations that was visibly planted with oil palms as a measure of efficiency. They analyzed satellite images to determine the area covered by oil palms on Borneo.
The study period covered the period from 2017 to 2023 and the condition before, during and after certification. It was found that the oil palm cover of the areas decreased from 2018 onwards. Accordingly, the plantations took measures to prepare for certification, which reduced efficiency.
